Letter From the Chairman
The Primary Election of May 4th is now behind us, and so we turn our full attention to the County Executive and Council Primary on September 7th and the General Election on November 2nd. Around the nation we are witnessing a groundswell of support for Republican principles and ideals as current political leaders continue to unsustainably spend taxpayer’s money and accelerate the seemingly endless growth of government. As we have long known, the average voter is much more intelligent than many in Washington give them credit for, and the voters can see clearly the ramifications of this type of reckless, self-serving governance. National and international headlines daily provide us with new, tangible examples of the potentially dire ramifications of runaway spending, unfunded entitlement programs, and governmental intrusion upon the machinations of the economy.
Here in Cuyahoga County we have the opportunity to do our part in reversing these trends. At the Federal level we have the chance to help elect Rob Portman as the next Senator from Ohio, along with Pete Corrigan and Tom Ganley as our next Congressmen in the 10th and 13th Congressional Districts, respectively. John Kasich and Mary Taylor lead an exciting slate of conservative statewide candidates, including our very own Josh Mandel for State Treasurer. At the local level, Matt Dolan and our candidates for County Council are poised to make competitive bids to bring common sense principles and ethics to the newly reformed Cuyahoga County Government.
Given this political environment, I want to focus your attention on one of the most important battles we face: the one for control of the Ohio Legislature in 2010. Republicans currently hold a majority in the Ohio Senate, but have been in the minority in the Ohio House since 2008. For the future of the State of Ohio, the importance of regaining GOP control of the House this year cannot be understated and with Democrats currently holding only a slim majority of 53-46, only four pickups are needed statewide to achieve this important goal!
As always, Cuyahoga County will be a key player in this battle. State Representative Nan Baker in 2008 defeated a Democrat incumbent in House District 16, and her great work in Columbus will serve her well in her reelection bid. In House District 17, Walton Hills Mayor Marlene Anielski is working hard to maintain the seat currently held by Josh Mandel. We also have an opportunity to take back the seat in House District 18, formerly held by current State Senator Tom Patton, with Mike Dovilla, a small businessman, Naval Reservist, and former Congressional candidate.
We are also mounting a strong challenge in District 7 with Tony Hocevar; in District 8 with Jerry Powell; in District 9 with Charles Perkel; in District 11 with Roz McAllister; in District 14 with Kevin Burke; and in District 98, with current State Senator Tim Grendell who is running to fill the seat formerly held by County Executive candidate Matt Dolan. In this newsletter you will find contact information for all of these great State Representative candidates, and I encourage you to find out who your specific candidate is, get in touch with them and assist them in their efforts any way you are able. Together we can help to create a better future for the State of Ohio!
Warmest regards,
